Portion control is hard.  In fact, it’s one of the hardest diet guidelines to follow. Without exact guidelines - such as 1 cup of rice or a scoop of potato - most people just get their portions going by the gut.

Even though it’s difficult, there’s no denying that portion control is one of the easiest ways to try to lose weight.  If you’re trying to just cut down food consumption in general, without following any solid diet plan, here are a few things you can do to help you succeed.

1. Use smaller plates

The smaller your plates, the less chances you have of putting too much food on it.  With larger kitchenware, even a hefty double serving of pasta and mashed potatoes can look like a conservative amount.  A small plate will ensure this doesn’t happen.   The less food you have in front of you, the less chance you’ll eat too much.

2. Eat slowly

Eating slowly allows you to feel fuller without eating as much.  For most folks, it takes a bit of time for the brain to process that the body is satiated.  Taking smaller bits and slowly chewing food down allows you to to get to this point without having consumed too much.

3.  Size of your fist

In the Scarsdale Diet, portion control is loosely relegated to the size of one’s fist. Personally, I find that a very good guideline, as most folks struggling with weight loss consume two or three times that during their meals.

Supermodel Adriana Lima has long had her figure plastered across many an adolescent male’s desktops as a wallpaper.  Her body is as close to perfection as you can get, after all.  Ever wondered what the diet secret has been for the longtime Victoria’s Secret model?

adriana limaAccording to Adriana, her diet (and ultimately her figure) hinges on a steadfast adherence to portion control.  As the day goes on, she keeps consuming smaller and smaller servings of food.  This allows her to have enough energy throughout the day yet keep her light on the calories at night before going to bed.

She starts off with a healthy heap of food at breakfast that normally consists of egg whites, coffee, milk and either oatmeal (with raisins) or muesli (with yogurt and honey).  Lunch time sees her consume some amount of fish, chicken or red meat, paired with vegetables.  Dinner is an extremely light of a small salad.  To keep off hunger pangs throughout the day, she takes regular snacks of cucumbers and carrots, along with a piece of chocolate (a once-a-day treat) and a spoonful of raw honey.

Adriana claims that the small portion she eats at night helps her sleep better, while the honey is supposed to help her immune system.  The diet seems good although folks trying to copy her eating regimen might want to do so with a little more salad during evenings.  A lot of people tend to get hungry late into the night and a little heavier dinner might prove enough to keep that situation at bay.  Since it’s salad, it shouldn’t pack on much additional calories as long as you watch the dressing!
